Can Alternative Recovery Work? A Personal Look at Healing Beyond the Traditional Path

Recovery looks different for everyone—and it should. For many years, I believed there was only one way to do it “right.” But as I’ve grown, so has my understanding of healing. In this post, I’ll share how my journey shifted from complete abstinence to a more balanced, personal path of alternative recovery—one rooted in trust, self-awareness, and deep transformation.

recovery is possible

What Led Me to Alternative Recovery

In my twenties, I was completely sober. I went to meetings regularly and followed the traditional model of recovery to the letter. For over seven years, I didn’t touch a drop of alcohol or use any substances. And that version of healing served me—for a time.

But when I found myself returning to recovery later in life, I realized that what I truly needed this time wasn’t just abstinence. I needed to heal the roots of my addiction. I needed to confront the burnout, trauma, disconnection, and deeply ingrained patterns that kept me in a cycle of “all or nothing” thinking.

My historical pattern was to swing from one extreme to the other. I was either perfectly “on” or completely “off.” This time, I knew that alternative recovery—a path that allowed for nuance, self-reflection, and compassion—was the only way forward for me.

Recovery Coaching Supports the Individual Path

One of the biggest shifts I made was releasing the fear-based mindset that told me, “If you ever drink again, you’ll spiral out of control.” That belief, while well-meaning, created more anxiety and shame than safety. It wasn’t in alignment with the path I was forging for myself—a path built on trust, not fear.

That said, I fully honor and support the traditional sobriety model. For many people, 100% abstinence is the most supportive and empowering route, and I respect that deeply. The key is this: recovery is personal, and recovery coaching can help people discover what path actually supports them—not what society or others prescribe.

In my own work as a holistic life coach, I guide clients through a journey of self-exploration. We explore what healing means to them. What safety looks like. What boundaries they need. What’s been buried beneath the addiction that needs attention and love.

Reconnecting Through Holistic Healing

What allowed me to truly transform was incorporating holistic healing practices into my life. Yoga, somatic work, breathwork, nervous system regulation, and spiritual reconnection have all played major roles in my evolution. I stopped asking, “What should I not do?” and started asking, “What do I need to feel whole again?”

That subtle shift changed everything.

Holistic healing isn’t about avoiding the hard stuff—it’s about being present with it. About learning to sit with discomfort without judgment. About finding tools that meet you exactly where you are. And about honoring the mind, body, and spirit together, as one complete system.

The Path is Yours to Walk

There is no right or wrong way to heal. Whether your path looks like full abstinence, harm reduction, spiritual practice, therapy, or a combination of many approaches—what matters most is that it feels true to you.

Alternative recovery, to me, means releasing the pressure to fit into someone else’s mold and learning to trust the wisdom of your own body and heart. It’s about giving yourself permission to evolve.

And as someone who’s walked multiple paths, I’m here to say: your journey is valid. Whatever it looks like.
