What Substance Abuse Really Looks Like

When people hear “substance abuse,” they often picture a stereotype, someone who’s hit rock bottom, someone unrecognizable. But the truth is much more complicated. Substance abuse looks like me. It looked like a woman climbing the corporate ladder, raising her daughter with love and intention, and building a life that appeared pretty dang perfect. But behind the curtain was pain, shame, and silent suffering. This is what substance abuse really looked like through my journey, and what healing continues to look like, too.

Substance Abuse Isn’t Always What You Think

Substance abuse looked like success.


It looked like a business woman building a department, renovating her dream home, and caring for farm animals. It looked like showing up at every school function, cheering at soccer games, and going out of her way to make sure her daughter always felt safe, seen, and loved.


It looked like being the reliable, fun-loving friend, the one always down for a concert, the one who danced in the front row, made people laugh, and never missed a moment.


But substance abuse also looked like crying on the shower floor, drinking alone just to numb th pain, and watching the sun rise after another night of self-destruction, feeling so consumed by shame that the only way to cope was to use more. It looked like OCD spirals, anxiety and rumination, deep depression, and a desperate need for peace that always felt out of reach.


The Messy Truth of Healing from Substance Abuse

The dichotomy of substance abuse is glaring: it’s trying so hard to hold it all together while slowly falling apart inside. It’s wanting better for your child and yourself, while sabotaging opportunities for change. It’s the silent scream of someone who’s drowning in shame and self-blame, yet functioning at full capacity to the outside world.


We have this image of what an “addict” looks like, but most of the time it a lie mascarading as okay . Substance abuse is messy. It’s rooted in a web of mental health struggles, unsupportive systems, trauma, repressed emotions, chemical imbalances, fear, and grief.


The path to healing is just as complicated.


But here’s what I know: healing is possible. It doesn’t happen overnight. It’s not linear. It’s full of setbacks, grief, and the slow process of untangling yourself from the patterns that once kept you alive but now hold you back.


Healing Begins With Belief

The first step isn’t detox or rehab or a perfect plan. It’s the subtle voice deep within that whispers there is more out there for you. That you can heal. That peace is possible. It’s one tiny step toward the light at a time, sometimes crawling, sometimes falling back, but always moving forward.


The only way out is through the muck and mire that led you there in the first place. And while it’s painful, it’s also profoundly beautiful. Because on the other side of it all is something we thought we lost: hope.
